Technical notes
HRA Calculator takes the least of actual HRA received, rent − 10% of salary, and 40/50% of salary as the exempt amount.
Exemptions and statutory amounts depend on your exact salary structure and current rules, so confirm with your employer or a tax professional.
Because it runs locally, results appear instantly with no server round-trip.
Worked example
Exempt HRA is the least of: actual HRA, rent − 10% of salary, and (50%/40%) of salary. On ₹40,000 salary, ₹20,000 HRA and ₹18,000 rent in a metro, rent−10% = 18,000−4,000 = ₹14,000 is usually the binding figure.
FAQ
How does this HRA calculator find the exemption?
It takes the least of three figures: HRA received, 50 percent of basic in a metro or 40 percent in a non-metro, and rent paid minus 10 percent of basic.
Does the HRA Calculator send my data to a server?
No. The HRA Calculator runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript; the values you enter never leave your device and nothing is uploaded or saved.
Why does the metro choice matter?
Metro cities allow up to 50 percent of basic in the calculation, while non-metro cities allow 40 percent, so the cap on the exemption changes.
Does HRA exemption apply in the new regime?
The HRA exemption is an old-regime benefit. If you opt for the new regime it generally does not apply, so use this for old-regime planning.
