Worked example
For the two points (2, 3) and (6, 11), slope is the change in y over the change in x: (11 − 3) ÷ (6 − 2) = 8 ÷ 4 = 2. A positive slope of 2 means the line rises two units for every one unit it moves right.

What happens for a vertical line?
If both points have the same x-value, the slope is not defined because the change in x is zero.
How is slope calculated?
Slope is the change in y divided by the change in x between the two points, often called rise over run.
What does a negative slope mean?
A negative slope means the line falls from left to right; a positive slope means it rises.
