About this calculator

With the Music BPM Calculator you can find a track's tempo in a few seconds. Supply your beats counted and over how many seconds and read the tempo in beats per minute, computed via beat timing. The tool is free, runs locally, and keeps every value on your machine.

Counting over a longer interval reduces error, since a miscount of one beat matters less. For precise tempo, dedicated tap-tempo tools or a metronome can help.

FAQ

How many beats should I count?

Counting over a longer stretch — say 15 to 30 seconds — gives a more accurate tempo than a very short count, because a single miscount has less impact.

How is BPM calculated?

Beats per minute equals the beats you counted divided by the seconds, multiplied by 60. So 16 beats in 8 seconds is 16 ÷ 8 × 60 = 120 BPM.

What is a typical song tempo?

Many pop songs sit around 100–130 BPM, ballads are slower, and dance tracks are often faster, but tempo varies widely by genre.

Does the Music BPM Calculator send my data to a server?

No. The Music BPM Calculator runs entirely in your browser — your inputs never leave your device, and nothing is uploaded or stored.

Worked example

At 120 BPM, one beat lasts 60,000 ÷ 120 = 500 ms; a quarter-note delay is therefore 500 ms.
